St. James in the Bronx

For any of you interested in attending a service at St. James Episcopal church in Fordham in the Bronx, where Tobias Haller is the vicar, here's the information:

Sunday 11:00 a.m. — Sung Holy Eucharist

How to get to Saint James Church

Saint James Church, Fordham is at the corner of Jerome Avenue and 190th Street, one block north of Fordham Road and two blocks south of Kingsbridge Road in the Northwest Bronx.

It is very easy to reach Saint James Church by public transportation from almost anywhere in the Bronx or Manhattan.

* The #4 Jerome Avenue Subway line stop "Fordham Road" is on Jerome Avenue one block south of the church.
* The D Subway line stop "Fordham Road" is on the Grand Concourse, one long block south and three short blocks east of the church.

It's a beautiful, old, Gothic-style church, built in the early 1860s, with lovely Tiffany glass windows.

Well, Mimi beat me to it! I'd love to see anybody who can come to St James the "Sunday Before" and look forward to seeing "all y'all" on Monday evening. A full set of directions, with a map, is available at the parish website.

Peace and joy,
Tobias

I wish we could. We'll be flying on on Sunday night.

I should have thought about this before we got our tickets.

HA ha, I can meet my hero IN PERSON. Newcastle is a step from Leeds.

However, my fear - as with all heroes - is that the reality might just be a disappointment, (heresy, I know)so I am keeping the mystery and image alive.

I might even make it to one of your meetings instead...

DP, any time that you can get away from your doorman's duties, come on over.

We'll see how this goes. I hope we all like each other in real life, however, the mystery will, indeed, be gone.

I have been there. Wonderful liturgy and truly wonderful people. And don't forget to stay after for fellowship!

Hint: coming up from Manhattan, take the #4, much shorter walk to the church--come down the stairs, turn right, cross to the east side of the street and you are there-- and riding the subway above ground in the Bronx is fun.

I got there a tad late--took the D train--and loved walking up the drive and this patch of green hearing the congregation sing from outdoors!

Andrew, thank you.

I have it. Take the No. 4.

I wish I could join you all at St. James, but it's been seven weeks since Liz and I have been at our home parish, St. Mary's (Manhattanville) and so we'll most likely go there this Sunday.

St. Mary's is on West 126th Street, just east of the #1 train at 125th Street and 2-1/2 blocks west of the A and D trains.

I forgot to mention that our main service at St. Mary's is at 10 AM.

Doug, this trip is a short one for me, with a lot that I want to do squeezed into a few days. Although I'd love to attend a service at St. James, I believe that it's going to be on another trip.

I definitely want to see "The Age of Rembrandt" at the Met, and Sunday is the only day I can go. The Met is usually crowded on that day. What I think I will do is try to get to the Met on Sunday morning around opening time at 9:30 or 10:00, when it will be a little less crowded (I hope) and attend Evensong somewhere later in the day.

If I happen to get to St. James, I'm an old lady with white hair, about average in height. I know that description fits many people, but I don't know what else I could say that could be helpful.

We won't make it to "The Age of Rembrandt" at the Met until Wednesday. I'm looking forward to hearing about it on Monday, though.

Are we still on for MOMA on Tuesday morning?

June Butler said...

Dennis, definitely we're on for MOMA. I'm looking forward to it.

I found out that the Guggenheim is open on Mondays - which I thought was a dead day for the art museums.

I'm writing a post about the trip, trying to give credit where credit is due, but I know I will leave someone out. Since I don't have a laptop, I will be offline during my stay.

Doug and everyone, change of plans. I will try to make the 11:00 service at St. James in the Bronx.

The Met is open until 8:45 on Sat., so I will go there on Sat. in the evening and go to St. James on Sun.

I'll look for you in front of St James just prior to 11 then.
It is suppose to be a warm, sunny day in NYC...with no chance of rain.
